When Tara first encountered a photograph of Black scuba divers exploring slave shipwrecks, she felt an undeniable pull to uncover their stories. That moment launched her on a global quest—from the shores of Senegal and South Africa to the waters of St. Croix and beyond—diving into the depths of history, identity, and belonging.


As the first Black female explorer to grace the cover of National Geographic and the 2022 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year, Tara’s work brings history to the surface—both literally and figuratively. Through deeply personal storytelling and historical reflection, she invites audiences to consider the resilience of the human spirit, the significance of remembrance, and the power of discovery.

Join museum staff on Thursday at 10 am for a quiet time outdoors in the forest.


Meet outside the museum by the entrance benches. We will welcome each other, walk out to the month’s sit spot, and sit quietly for 30-45 minutes. Together, let’s rest, restore our spirits, watch birds or butterflies, do a little nature journaling, or whatever is comfortable and quiet for each. Each month we’ll visit a different nearby location on the Museum’s property..


May 15: sit in and around the Retreat’s mini meadow (0.2 mi walk; trail generally level after going down and up from creek, has roots).


We plan to have sessions in June, July, August, and September also. Each one will be at different forest spots around the Museum. Locations may change if it is raining.


Please bring any of these you wish: water, tick repellent, journaling materials, binoculars, camp stool, pillow, sitting mat. Hats recommended.

About:  PACES Hillsborough is focused on creating a trauma-informed community using the science related to the health impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in combination with the hope and resilience that comes from research based on Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs). Communities can be places where traumatic experiences occur, but they can also be a source of protection, health promotion, and support. We welcome anyone with an interest in decreasing the exposure and impact of trauma and adversity in the lives of children. The Spring 2025 Conference is our 3rd annual conference and will host multiple sessions with a focus on research, science and lived experiences. This training will be beneficial for anyone who works with children, families, caregivers, and other professionals.

We invite you to join us for ARTfactory's "Open Flow Friday" event on May 16 from 7 to 9:30 pm in the art gallery (1st floor)! Open Flow Friday applies a creative spin to the "open mic night" concept, additionally encouraging ALL types of creatives to participate, present, and/or perform their craft! Open Flow Friday offers an open mic, and open art demonstration space for local artists to share their art form with an audience, whether you are a poet, author, musician, artist, etc. This is your safe space for creativity, community, and self-expression! This event is free and open to the public.

No partner is required.

Mostly Salsa music is played but also Cha Cha, Bachata, Merengue, Tango, Reggaeton, R&B, Cumbia and Latin styled pop and R&B also.

We recommend wearing clothing that is light and cool, despite what the weather is outside. Since you will be spinning, wear something tighter fitting, especially around the torso and waist area. Inexperienced dancers should wear simple flat dress shoes with slippy bottoms that fit tightly on the foot.


Bring your own food and drink or order take out from the Rhythm Kitchen. Pop, water and ice for sale on the floor for $1.00
