H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), the influential American horror writer, was an eloquent defender of the value of regional folk traditions, which he saw as inventions meant to stave off a sense of alienation caused by the meaninglessness of human life on a cosmic scale. Humans are therefore free to invent new traditions, based on older elements. 
Lovecraft did this himself in much of his fiction, creating realistic and convincing monsters, imaginary New England towns and books of occult lore. Join us in person. Tim Evans is retired from the Folk Studies Program at Western Kentucky University, where he taught for 24 years. He has also worked as a folklorist in Wyoming, Virginia and Iowa. He has a PhD in Folklore and American Studies from Indiana University.

In October, Ghostlight Ensemble will present the second installment of Happy Hour — a staged reading series made up of short plays with one thing in common, they’re all set in bars. The setting for this event will be, naturally, a bar. So, join us as at My Buddy’s as we raise a glass to that oldest of human inspiration: spirits in a glass.

Happy Hour features a mix of writers from the greater Chicago area, but also submissions from across the Midwest as well as the coasts. 

The eight stories that make up the show include tales of new loves, old loves, connections new and old, grief, joy and Big Foot. 

Admission is donation-based and taken at the door (suggested minimum donation of $5) that will help pay for our upcoming mainstage show.

Top Chicago jazz players will bring Afro Cuban rhythms to Evanston’s AKAR Auditorium.  .  It’s a special “Donovan’s Garage” jazz event.
 
The quintet features the jazz violinist James Sanders, whose Proyecto Libre (free project) shows pull equally from free improvisation and Afro-Latin traditions.

Joining Sanders in this blue chip quintet will be:

•	Percussionist Jean Leroy, one of Chicago’s most recognized Afro-Cuban musicians  

•	Drummer  Sarah Allen who has performed worldwide with Chicago credentials that include performances with Blue Man Group, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and many more.

•	Bass player Freddie Quinteros , a native of Venezuela now based in Chicago performs widely with Latin jazz and jazz ensembles and notably is bassist for the Latin jazz trio Venezuelan Collective

•	On guitar will be Donovan Mixon, creator of the “Donovan’s Garage” shows, is a fixture in the Chicago jazz scene who has performed throughout the world.

A Special Feature: The work of the Evanston visual artist Claire Tarnacki will be on display in the lobby of the AKAR Auditorium before and after the show.

On the evening of Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 PM, the Des Plaines Theatre will come alive with heart and purpose as some of Chicago’s most beloved musicians, media personalities, and entertainers unite for “Stars for Sara,” a charitable benefit honoring the memory of Sara Janz, who passed away far too young at the age of 29.

The concept, devised by her mother, Roz Varon, veteran WLS-TV Traffic Anchor, was presented to Entertainment Producer powerhouse Ron Onesti, who agreed without hesitation, to donate his venue for the evening. The event will raise funds for the “Sara Janz Take Your Shot Memorial Scholarship” through the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the producer of the Chicago/Midwest Emmy®

Her hard-hitting brand of comedy is impossible to ignore, making her a comedic force to be reckoned with. As a young mother, Lyssa is able to connect with many audience members through shared experiences and a unique sense of humor. Performing at clubs all over the city, she has achieved a lot in her short comedy career and only plans to do bigger and better things. This October, join the town elders of Brian’s Hollow in the meetinghouse for an immersive 50-minute folk horror sketch comedy show about a cursed 1600s Puritan village spiraling into chaos — told one town meeting at a time.

Come witness the folklore for yourself and become a part of the town. The proceedings will include BRAND NEW sketches, original music, immersive elements, and even more four-headed Beast sightings.

The meeting shall be led by October Brian (Goodman Michael Salles Holtzman, Goodman Jackson Viccora, Goodman John O’Neill, and Goody Katherine Coates), a sketch comedy council who’s written and performed together for over a decade. Their past appearances include the BBC, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and in theaters across Chicago.

Speaker Bios:
Nancy Gianni is the Founder and Chief Belief Officer of GiGi’s Playhouse, created in honor of her daughter GiGi, who was born with Down syndrome. Refusing to accept limitations, Nancy grew one small center into more than 40 locations across the U.S. and Mexico, offering free educational, therapeutic, and career programs for children and young adults with special needs. Named a CNN Hero in 2016, she is dedicated to changing perceptions, celebrating abilities, and inspiring communities to embrace the unique potential of every child.
GiGi Gianni has been inspiring others since she was born in 2002. Born with Down syndrome, she is the namesake and Chief Inspiration Officer of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, which has grown to more than 61 locations and supports families in 93 countries. The youngest of four children, GiGi enjoys fashion, fitness, dancing, and having fun. She is also an author, motivational speaker, influencer, advocate, and gifted singer who has performed the National Anthem at events ranging from Chicago Cubs games to a country concert with Scotty McCreery.
Dr. Margaret Scotellaro is the Medical Director for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Rush University Children’s Hospital. Board certified in General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics, she specializes in foster care, child advocacy, and children with special healthcare needs. She is the Immediate Past President of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on multiple statewide child welfare committees. Dr. Scotellaro is also a foster and adoptive parent to a child with medical needs and lives in the western suburbs with her husband and five children.
Kaycee Coles is the organizer of the Ladies Leadership Luncheon, is the Vice Chair of Let It Be Us and is on the Fundraising Committee.  Kaycee is a former educator teaching US History and Psychology and she is a licensed reading specialist. She is a mother to three sons. She has worked in the non-profit sector in education, advocacy, and legislative areas.  Kaycee was instrumental in co-leading an effort to design, build and fundraise for an inclusive playground project at Countryside Elementary School.  She is also a member of the Barrington Civic Leaders Program. 
Dr. Susan A. McConnell is the Founder and Executive Director of Let It Be Us. She has held the position of Chair of the Permanency Committee for the Illinois Statewide Foster Care Advisory Council for 4 years. She recently graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with a Doctoral Degree in Social Work. Susan is the mother to four free range young adults, three of whom joined her family through adoption. She has over 30 years of experience with special needs and open adoption.

Following our sold-out June debut, Casa Triana returns on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with an expanded lineup of artists from Chicago and beyond. Experience the power of flamenco as song (cante), guitar (toque), percussion, and dance (baile) come together to bring the spirit of a Spanish tablao to Chicago.

Riley Samuel Merritt

TRUNK is a one-man, interactive production that delves into the mind of a young artist reckoning with his approaching death. Written and performed by Riley Samuel Merritt, the play draws from over a decade of his personal writings—poetry, prose, and eight original songs—to examine the fragile intersections of identity, ambition, and connection.

Inspired by the 15th-century morality play Everyman, TRUNK reimagines the age-old confrontation with mortality through the lens of a flawed, modern creative. While the narrative is not autobiographical, Merritt uses his own life as a vessel to explore the universal story of what it means to live truthfully—and die honestly—as an artist. 

Audience participation is central to the show, making each performance a shared act of reflection and storytelling. Viewers are invited to contribute their voices, reinforcing TRUNK’s core themes of community and collective memory. 

Ultimately, TRUNK is both a personal unpacking and a public offering—a meditation on legacy, vulnerability, and the moral responsibility of the modern artist in a world that often forgets to listen.

Riley Samuel Merritt is an actor, writer, and musician raised in the rugged four corners region. Riley graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in musical theatre, and has spent his years since training and creating in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico, having acted in such shows as Little Night Music (Henrik), You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Charlie Brown), Heroes of the Fourth Turning (Kevin), Taming of the Shrew (Bianco), and many more. Now transplanted to metropolitan Chicago, Riley is presenting “TRUNK”: an original one-man show which celebrates art and humanity through the use of poetry, song, and years of cumulative writing.
