Hollins University will serve as host for Roanoke author Dan Smith's launch of his second novel, NEWS!, in the Rathskeller at the Moody Center. Smith will sign and read passages from the novel.
NEWS! is a roman a clef, a coming of age story of a young sportswriter who is cast into the world of hard news when an airliner crashes nearby. Eb McCourry has had no experience in news, but catches on fast and becomes obsessed with journalism. The story is based on actual events and people. The story is set in late 1969 in a medium-sized Southern city (Asheville, N.C.) where the newspaper is the citizens' touchstone to the changing world. It is also a time of great change in jorunalism and Eb is right in the middle of it. Roanoke Times columnist Dan Casey calls NEWS! "A wild ride through journalism." Author Roland Lazenby says Smith "delivers a vivid tale of the shock and awe that a big news event can bring to everyday life and how those events long remain indelible for those who cover them." Journalist Dwayne Yancey writes that "Smith is a masterful storyteller who has the ink of an old-school newsman running in his veins."
