Globe-trotting Vancouver Island jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge will be joined by soulful jazz organist:pianist Dr Tony Genge (PhD Music), first-call Vancouver Island jazz 🎷 Ryan Oliver, & the exceptionally swinging young drummer, Graham Villette. Angela was recognized by JazzTimes Magazine as Best Female Vocalist in the readers’ poll in 2020. You can find Angela Verbrugge's Earshot #1 / JazzWeek ranked recordings on all streaming platforms and YouTube, but this is the first time she has adapted her standards repertoire for organ quartet.

Like the beautiful orange sunsets that transform day to night, the Sunset Swing show will transform your mood on a soul level with fun groovy interpretations of jazz standards (such as tunes by Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, and as performed by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Julie London, Frank Sinatra, Anita O’Day and more recently by Vancouver Island-born and raised Diana Krall).

There is something magical that happens when certain instruments in combination become sonically more than the sum of their individual parts. Hermann’s regulars well know the magic of the full sound and rhythmic possibilities of Dr Genge-led piano trios plus voice, but on Thursday March 7, they will be delighted to hear award-winning jazz vocalist/lyricist Angela Verbrugge light up the stage with the soul-feeding and thrilling sound of his B3 organ trio.

Dr Tony Genge (PhD, Mus.) is joined by respected island jazz guitarist Andrew Janusson, and rising star drummer Graham Villette. As a jazz pianist, his cool and swinging style references the great jazz piano tradition of pianists such Ahmad Jamal, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver and Les McCann.

As a jazz organist, Genge presents his bluesy, soul-jazz influenced style on the Hammond B3 organ in concerts and clubs. His roots are in the stylings of the great jazz organists such as Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Jack McDuff and Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes, combined with a variety of modern jazz influences.

Over the years Genge has performed with many leading international jazz artists, including Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, Paul Horn, John Abercrombie, Randy Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, Jeff Hamilton, Roberta Gamberini, Adam Nussbaum, Gene Bertoncini, Joey Baron, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskin, Larry Grenadier, Lew Soloff, P.J. Perry and many others.


Surely this quartet must be one of the swingingist groups in Canada and we are delighted for them to take the stage at Hermann’s before Angela heads back to her European tour of Germany and France in April. The vocalist has had a meteoric rise since her debut album in 2019 and has since toured her music across Canada, Japan, Luxembourg, Germany, UK and Türkiye. She has been positively reviewed by major jazz publications and important critics including JazzTimes, JazzWise, JazzLives, Whole Note, LA Jazz Journal, Jersey Jazz, Jazziz, Couleurs Jazz France and many more. Her albums have received airplay on CBC, and internationally significant jazz programs, and she was number one for jazz on the Earshot chart multiple weeks.

Moonlight and Mischief built a thoughtful set list of jazz renditions of favourites songs you’ll recognize from popular culture alongside lesser known jazz standards, and originals penned by Verbrugge in a vintage musical theatre- and classic jazz real book-style. Stavroz was formed in 2011 by IJsbrand & Gert, both dj’s and sound engineers looking for a way to channel their musical antics. Soon thereafter, Maxim & Pieter joined on live shows and in the studio. Their first EP release “The Ginning” was picked up on international blogs, resulting the highest position on the Hype Machine and was chosen vinyl of the month by the German ‘Faze Magazine’. Back home in Belgium, they were awarded second best breakthrough artist, coming in just after Oscar & The Wolf. Known for injecting an overall ethnic, acoustic and organic vibe to electronic music, these four friends pocketed releases for Kindisch, Laut & Luise, Bedrock, Delicieuse and their own label ‘Moodfamily’ in Ghent. Kristian Matsson has never remained in one place for very long. Having spent much of the last decade touring around the world as The Tallest Man on Earth, Matsson has captivated audiences using, as The New York Times describes, “every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away…Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk, and his songs are troubadour ballads at heart.”

Then came 2020, when Matsson left New York City and returned to his farm in Sweden. There, during that quiet, dreary time of isolation, he drowned out his thoughts by manically growing vegetables in his garden. When he tried writing again, during those many months of collective forced solitude, “I just found myself commenting on the darkness,” Matsson says. “I lost my imagination.” Playing live, music and inspiration returned near the end of 2021, and his produce became less of a priority. “When I’m in motion, I can focus on my instinct, have my daydreams again. When I was finally able to tour again, I started writing like a madman.” He eventually had twenty songs he wanted to record in ten days.

Now, Matsson returns as The Tallest Man on Earth with Henry St., his sixth studio album following 2012’s There’s No Leaving Now, full of “vivid imagery, clever turns-of-phrase, and devastating, world-weary observations” (Under The Radar) and 2015’s Dark Bird Is A Home, his “most personal record… surreal and dreamlike” (Pitchfork). Henry St. notably marks the first time he recorded an album in a band setting. “My entire career I’ve been a DIY person––mostly fueled by the feeling that I didn’t know what I was doing, so I’d just do everything myself.” But now, longing for the energy that’s only released when creating together with others, Matsson invited his friends to come and play.

Nick Sanborn (of Sylvan Esso) produced Henry St., which includes contributions from Ryan Gustafson (of The Dead Tongues) on guitar, lap steel and ukulele, TJ Maiani on drums, CJ Camerieri (of Bon Iver) on trumpet and French horn, Phil Cook on piano and organ, Rob Moose (of Bon Iver, yMusic) on strings and Adam Schatz on saxophone. “They opened everything up, and understood what the songs that I’d written needed: sounds that I couldn’t ever have thought of or created myself. We recorded so many of the songs live in the studio, playing, having fun and being really open with each other.”

An overarching theme of Henry St., he says, is “how to be a person in this world.” The title track is about the deception that, “as individuals, we’re told that we should strive for success. But when we have it, it doesn’t solve anything. The song is about stepping away and thinking: why am I actually doing this?” While writing the song back in Sweden, he knew it would be the centerpiece of the album. “It’s the low point and the turnaround: the other songs are a reminder that I will always be a stubborn optimist, even at the darkest of times.” He was about to record the track as a solo piece, until Phil Cook came in on his first day in the studio. “I had Phil basically hanging over my shoulders at the piano while we were playing, and then he recorded it. He improvised that beautiful outro. When he did, our jaws dropped––I was in tears.”

“Looking for Love” is one of those songs about Matsson’s stubborn optimism, and a shining example of Sanborn’s influence on the album. “The first day in the studio, Nick created this hissing noise while I was feedbacking electric guitar. We had so much fun jamming like that. Then Nick put down some piano to overdub my guitar, and we knew we had the song.” The tone for their collaboration was set. “Nick is so emotionally intelligent, and we share an almost childlike joy in things that can happen with music. He makes the songs come truly alive by keeping the performances and the humanity in––the kind of stuff that just happens during the session.”

The song “Every Little Heart,” he says, came from a feeling of fearlessness, a confidence in making music after two years of relative silence. “But of course I still have little demons inside of me. I wrote some key changes in the song that came natural to me, but I worried they might sound unnatural to others. When TJ Maiani heard it, he straightaway went into this drumbeat that shocked me a little at first, but came completely natural to him. It fit the song perfectly.”

Matsson’s longing for social interchange, after months spent with only his crops, led to the collaboration that delivered the warm, unique and sprawling sound of Henry St. “It’s the most playful, most me album yet, because it covers so many of the different noises in my head. When you overthink things, you get further away from your original ideas. And God knows I overthink things when I’m by myself.” The time in isolation also brought him some newfound peace of mind. “Having been away from it taught me that making music and performing is what I’m doing for the rest of my life, and I’m so grateful for it. It has given me new confidence and playfulness. This is what I do. It’s unconditional.”

The Swedish singer-songwriter troubadour Kristian Matsson, better known as The Tallest Man on Earth has a rare talent for captivating an audience with just his raw, grainy voice and a guitar. He plays various string instruments, ranging from acoustic guitar, banjo and he recently picked up and started exploring the realm of the violin as well. The coming year will see him on the road again through Europe and North-America.

The project of Kristian Matsson - who has spent much of the last 19 years touring around the world as The Tallest Man On Earth - has captivated audiences using “every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away…” (The New York Times). In 2020, Matsson left New York City and returned to his farm in Sweden where he drowned out his thoughts by manically growing vegetables in his garden. It was only near the end of 2021, as he began to tour again, that the inspiration returned. “When I’m in motion, I can focus on my instinct, have my daydreams again. When I was finally able to tour again, I started writing like a madman.” He eventually had a collection of songs, revealing what would become Henry St, an album that sees Matsson exploring his own stubborn optimism and “how to be a person in this world”.

After 2015's Dark Bird Is Home, described by Pitchfork as his "most personal record... surreal and dreamlike," and his self-released I Love You, It’s a Fever Dream in 2019, Kristian Matsson returned in 2022 with the intricate cover album Too Late for Edelweiss. In 2023, he unveiled his sixth album, Henry St., marking the first time he recorded with a full band. “For most of my career, I’ve been a DIY artist, driven by the feeling that I didn’t know what I was doing, so I just handled everything myself,” Matsson explained. But with Henry St., he craved the creative spark that comes from collaboration and invited his friends to join him in the studio.
 
Henry St. was produced by Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso and features contributions from an impressive roster, including Ryan Gustafson (guitar, lap steel, ukulele), TJ Maiani (drums), CJ Camerieri of Bon Iver (trumpet, French horn), Phil Cook (piano, organ), Rob Moose of Bon Iver and yMusic (strings), and Adam Schatz (saxophone). Together, they brought Matsson’s songs to life. “They understood exactly what my songs needed—sounds I could never have imagined or created on my own. Many tracks were recorded live in the studio, with everyone playing together, having fun, and staying open to the moment”.

Critics often draw comparisons between The Tallest Man on Earth and Bob Dylan, citing similarities in both songwriting and vocal style. Matsson himself has acknowledged Dylan's influence, revealing that he started listening to him at the age of fifteen. Fascinated by Dylan's covers, he delved into their origins, which gradually introduced him to early American folk artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. However, Matsson is quick to distance himself from being part of any specific tradition, stating, “I don’t want to be part of a tradition. I just want to do what feels natural to me. This is how I play, and this is how I write songs".

In 2024 Matteson performed together with the string orchestra Amsterdam Sinfonietta. He presented a program featuring Swedish folk music, works by classical Scandinavian composers, a selection of the singer’s own growing repertoire of beautiful songs, and covers of artists such as Bob Dylan and Adele. Special guests included the New York-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider, led by Colin Jacobsen. He also performed three sold out shows with the Swedish Gävle Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Karl-Johan Ankarblom. Because of the success and warm reception of those performances 2025 will see more of a The Tallest Man on Earth collaboration with Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden and with a chamber ensemble across North-America. But first he’s lining up for this spring’s solo tour in America and a festival run during the summer.

Anna Morsett has never been in one place for too long. Whether traveling in her mind or in actual transit, she has always been searching for the steadiness that her band name implies: The Still Tide.
 
While Morsett’s project has gone through several iterations, hometowns and releases the one constant has always been her honest, intentional and luminous brand of indie rock. Influenced as much by growing up in the Pacific Northwest as by her experiences traveling the globe as a guitar tech for artists such as The Tallest Man on Earth and Kaki King, The Still Tide is Morsett’s true and heartfelt landing place for her confessional lyrics and intricate guitar work.

Her latest release, Between Skies, is her first for mod y vi Records (the label responsible for releasing two of Nathaniel Rateliff’s critically acclaimed folk albums) and was produced by Morsett and long time collaborator Joe Richmond. A major step forward both sonically and artistically Between Skies was mixed by Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens).

In an era where everyone seemingly wants to blow up overnight, MICO is proof that nothing beats great music and consistency. In late 2018, a 16 year-old Miguel Veloso would sing in Discord servers and Twitch streams to connect with new listeners one-by-one. Now at 21 years old, MICO’s hard work has paid off in the form of a cult fandom and over 60 million global streams… all without the aid of a record label.


For MICO, the internet isn’t something to be overthought—it’s like his second home, organically growing a following of over 750,000 dedicated “amicos” over the last 5 years. Coming off his radio hit “cut my hair” and sold-out debut show in late 2022, MICO released his much anticipated EP “the tears we fight” the following September. Followed up by a 3-track EP titled “the afterparty” in December, the sister projects were generating viral hits like “another soul” and “better”, with fans coming back for every release.


In 2023, MICO sought to break the stigma surrounding online artists by embarking on two tours spanning Canada & the US. Selling out a multitude of shows across both countries, MICO continues to prove the industry wrong, forcefully becoming one of the main up-and-coming alternative pop artists to breakthrough in recent years.


And 2024 is showing no signs of stopping for the alt-pop rising phenom, kicking off the year with his largest show to date at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, and gearing up for a new music era - slated for the Fall - with plans of touring globally this go-round.
