Forged in a cauldron of raging, inspiring contemporary jazz, the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio pushes the boundaries of jazz and world music, providing an undiluted display of rampaging energy and captivating musicianship.

Ledbetter is a fiery, passionate performer whose music knows no boundaries. His compositions are wildly creative and deeply emotional. At Ledbetter’s hands, the piano roars, whispers, cries, and laughs, telling stories as only he can, evoking cinematic images in the listeners’ minds.

The Jeremy Ledbetter Trio’s second album, “Gravity”, sees Jeremy joined by Grammy-winning drummer Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy) and renowned electric bassist Rich Brown (Steve Coleman’s Five Elements), who offer the perfect counterpart to Ledbetter’s iconoclastic energy at the piano. “Gravity” has taken the jazz world by storm, racking up a Juno Award (Canada’s top music prize) for Jazz Album of the Year, the title “Best in Canadian Jazz” from Jazz FM91, and over half a million streams worldwide. For this concert, the gifted and versatile bassist Andrew Stewart replaces Brown.

Juno Nominee and 2025 Western Canadian Music Artistic Award Nominees for Global Artist of the Year and Jazz Artist of the Year) Raagaverse, led by Shruti Ramani (voice) with Jodi Proznick (bass), Noah Franche-Nolan (piano) and Nicholas Bracewell (drums), is a creative Indo-Jazz fusion band that pays homage to the two deeply historical and culturally-significant genres: classical Hindustani music and Jazz.

Bandleader Ramani brings her expertise in Hindustani music together with the quartet’s appreciation, knowledge, affinity and experience of the Jazz and other musical artforms. Raagaverse retains the authenticity of both traditions, melding them seamlessly into one cohesive sound that is both dynamic and explosive with immense respect, depth and beauty. Shruti’s musical fluency originates from her rigorous Hindustani training and degree under Dr. Ritu Johri in Mumbai, India, and her studies leading to a degree in Jazz from Capilano University. Her original compositions use melodies ornamented with traditional Hindustani nuances, with underlying modern Jazz harmonies and rhythms.

Jodi brings her musical mastery on the bass as well as her insight and experience performing, recording, touring and promoting her music. Noah is a stellar composer, pianist and keyboard player well known for his cross-disciplinary collaborations in jazz and classical idioms and for blending different musical styles. Nicholas is talented young drummer who immediately connected with the music and musicians of Raagaverse.

Jesse Loren Strickman performs a free public three hour set at 2nd Street Gastown, Water Street Cafe. Award-winning California singer-songwriter Jesse Loren Strickman is known for potent lyrics and powerful, acoustic-based music. Emotionally charged vocals sail over jaunty chords in songs about heartache, healing and peace. Annually touring the Pacific West Coast as the frontman of indie folk bands, Strickman has played everywhere from intimate cafes to outdoor amphitheaters and festivals. He’s opened for national and world acts such as Damien Jurado, Jay Brannan, CAKE, The T Sisters, Aaron Ross (Hella), Night Riots, Sunny And The Black Pack, and Jhameel (American Idol). Strickman’s versatile songwriting is accentuated with the full band, merging everything from guy/girl vocal harmonies to rock guitar solos, and from swooning violin to quirky glockenspiel. With the help of skilled multi-instrumentalists made up of SF Conservatory of Music graduates and a guitarist who toured in Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, each song dictates the mood and instrumentation to tell its own story.

The Chicago-based progressive metal outfit Born of Osiris are known as one of the first deathcore acts from the 2000s to leave that genre behind in favor of a brutal yet alluring meld of technical death metal and metalcore filled with flashy twin-guitar leads and near-psychedelic keyboard adventures that owe as much to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as they do Helloween and Meshuggah. Though they began as a typical deathcore band with 2007's The New Reign EP, by 2009's Higher Place, they'd all but abandoned that sound to focus on a more technically advanced, melodically astute, and brutally forceful approach. Its appeal garnered an ever-growing cadre of admirers. They have placed four albums in the upper half of the U.S. album chart, including 2013's Tomorrow We Die Alive, which peaked at number 27. Subsequent titles like 2015's Soul Sphere went to number two on the hard rock charts. 2017's The Eternal Reign was a progressive, track-by-track re-recording of 2007's The New Reign; it met with both high praise and withering criticism. 2019's The Simulation was 28-minute EP that was reportedly the first of a two-part album, but it never materialized. An entirely different outing titled Angel or Alien appeared in July 2021.

 

Before assuming their name, they cycled through monikers such as Diminished, Your Heart Engraved, and Rosecrance. Drummer Cameron Losch, guitarists Lee McKinney and Matt Pantelis, vocalist Ronnie Canizaro, keyboardist Joe Buras, and bassist David Da Rocha (who left in 2018 and was replaced by Nick Rossi) met while in high school and experimented with various sounds and genres before developing an early version of their signature blend; after a demo and a live gig, they came to the attention of Sumerian Records, which signed the band. The New Reign EP appeared in 2007. Pantelis left in 2008 before the recording of 2009's A Higher Place. That album sold well enough to land inside the Top 100. All Shall Perish guitarist Jason Richardson temporarily joined the band in 2009. He played on 2011's The Discovery (an album that was cut using seven-string guitars) before being fired later in the year. Produced by the band, it didn't place as high on the pop chart, but fared better than all previous outings on various indie and metal charts.

 

Pared down to a quintet, Born of Osiris released Tomorrow We Die Alive in August of 2013. In another sonic shift, they opted for a more orchestrated sound, one that involved more vocal layers and programmed orchestration by co-producer Nick Sampson. Buras' keyboards were a central focus on the set, but the band's attack remained as aggressive as ever. The album placed inside the Top 30 during its release week and inside the Top Ten on various other charts.

After aggressive touring, the band re-entered the studio. In the summer of 2015, Born of Osiris began leaking small bits and pieces of a forthcoming, somewhat conceptual album. Its 12 tracks were divided into three "levels": The Binding, The Fight, and The Release, with four cuts in each. Titled Soul Sphere, it was released while Born of Osiris were in the middle of a lengthy tour (which ended up being cut shortly after guitarist McKinney broke his foot in several places). Soul Sphere peaked at number 67 on the Billboard 200. The band returned in 2017 with its second EP, The Eternal Reign, a re-recorded new vision of their debut produced by Nick Sampson. After a summer 2018 tour, Da Rocha left and was replaced by Rossi. BoO released the video and single "The Accursed" in November. It served as the opening track for The Simulation, a 25-minute mini-album issued in January.

Though they had come close to completing a sequel for The Simulation, BoO abandoned it in favor of new songs emerging from Canizaro and Buras in the aftermath of ending longterm relationships. They completed Angel or Alien in February of 2020, but it was delayed until July 2021 due to the pandemic. The set showcased Rossi moving from bass to guitar (both guitarists handled bass duties on the album), offering the band's first twin-guitar attack since guitarist Jason Richardson departed after 2011's The Discovery.

Hailing from Fremont, OH, the four piece Christian metalcore act known as Convictions is starting to make an impact on the world. Dubbing themselves “Aggressive Worship,” the band is not your everyday Christian band. Setting out to write lyrical content based on their own “convictions,” the band covers topics that push the boundaries.

“We feel that, just because you are a Christian, doesn’t mean you are exempt from the struggles of this world.” With an infectious live show, one can never predict what will happen when seeing the band live. On stage and off, Convictions never fails to draw you in and capture your emotions.

Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean turned 16 after Woodstock but before Varg started burning down Norwegian churches. And yet, until just two short years ago, McBean had lived his entire adolescence and adult life without a proper driver’s license, that first and most coveted ticket to personal independence. When he did finally take the wheel in 2017, he essentially became a Sixteen Year Old for the first time, blowing out the doors off the DMV like a pyrotechnics display at a W.A.S.P. gig. Black Mountain’s new album, Destroyer, named after the discontinued single-run 1985 Dodge Destroyer muscle car, is imbued with all that wild-ass freedom and newfound agency (and anxiety and fear) that comes with one's first time behind the wheel. McBean, welding mask pulled over his Alan Watts beard, has even been rebuilding a 1985 Destroyer in his step-dad’s garage all spring — building it from its frame, putting in weekends of work to have this beast ready for sunnier days. And wouldn’t you know it: when the Destoyer's engine gives its deep snarl and the stereo rattles with Metallica's $5.98 EP, McBean is fully in the driver’s seat. Destroyer is structured around that first time behind the wheel of a hot rod. The fat, charging “Living After Midnight” riffs of opener “Future Shade” is, according to McBean, “Straight outta the gates. FM radio cranked.” He ain’t kidding. The song, and all of Destroyer for that matter, seems to exist at that crucial nexus of the early-to-mid 80s Los Angeles when a war between punk and hair metal was waged. Black Flag’s My War tried and failed to keep the peace. But in the trenches, some hybrid ghoul was beginning to form in bands like Jane’s Addiction and White Zombie. The heavy extended player “Horns Arising,” with its Night Rider vocals and golden, climbing Blade Runner synths, is a fill-up at a desert gas station just in time to see a UFO hovering near a mesa. . And other songs, like The serpentine “Boogie Lover” is a cruise down the Sunset Strip. You pull into The Rainbow Bar & Grill to take the edge off. Doesn’t matter what year it is, Lemmy’s there in flesh or spirit. To continue the teenage theme, there’s also a sense of to these cuts — “High Rise” is a foray into Japanese psych, rounding the bend to a careening, youthful sense of discovery, while “Closer to the Edge” feeling like falling in love with Yes (Remember how good they were for a minute there in your youth?). “Licensed to Drive” would easily be the most exhilarating and dangerous ripper on a titular film’s soundtrack, a dose of heavy right before the muscle car’s wheels fly off going 100 mph on the freeway. Shacked up in his rehearsal space, McBean found an old chair in an alley, spray painted Producer on the back and pressed record. Friends from the endless rock’n’roll highway were invited over and 22 songs were brought to life. And while some were laid back into shallow graves to dig up once again at a later date, the remaining skeletons were left above ground — given organs, skin, eyes, and the opportunity to grow their hair real long and greasy. Some of these zombie hesher jams were sent on a journey to Canada where longtime band member Jeremy Schmidt, slipping on the Official Collaborator satin jacket, had at them with his legendary synth arsenal. As he added long flowing robes, sunglasses, driving gloves and medallions, the undead songs began to transform into the new breathing creatures that make up Destroyer. Schmidt’s work with these songs was the needed transformative glue for this new era of Black Mountain. Coming off his newfound automotive freedom, McBean also saw some personnel shuffling within Black Mountain. Both Joshua Wells and Amber Webber have retired their Black Mountain Army uniforms while Arjan Miranda paid his outstanding membership dues and rejoined. New members include Rachel Fannan (Sleepy Sun) and Adam Bulgasem (Dommengang & Soft Kill) plus other familiar names like Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips), Kid Millions (Oneida), and John Congleton (St Vincent, Swans) take a turn in the shotgun seat. Collectively, there’s a renewed vitality to Black Mountain on Destroyer — a seasoned, veteran of heady hard rock that’s found new, young muscles to flex and roads to explore.

Led by Rupert Yakelashek, Teenage Art Scene is a solo project turned supergroup comprising Huckleberry Flett of Silverware, Marco Bernardez-Lai of Good luck Madeline and The Aubreys, and Will Jagger of Peanut Butter Telephone. Playing uniquely crafted pop songs with the energy of a punk band, Teenage Art Scene has established themselves as upcoming stars in the Canadian music scene. Campus and community radio has taken notice and the band has consistently charted on the !Earshot top 50 and has been in rotation across the county for the last 3 years. Teenage Art Scene’s winning blend of Power Pop, Slacker Rock, and Indie Pop can be heard across the albums “Spill!”, “Wrong Datum”, “Sensory Entanglement”, and “Minor Leagues”. Not ones to repeat themselves, “Pipes on the Inside” embraces indie electronica and experimental synth pop. “Lo Gain High Fuzz” is a record split in half between psychedelic folk and amped up garage rock. The Bandcamp new and notable writes “Hooky, guitar-heavy power pop from Victoria, BC, Teenage Art Scene writes songs with wry lyrics and huge refrains.” and journalist Michael Kissinger writes that “Teenage Art Scene’s hooks, fuzzed-out riffs and soaring melodies are as big, bright and slick as they come.” Teenage Art Scene released their Latest critically acclaimed album “Minor Leagues” in June 2024.

 The Hausplants are an post-punk band from the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaʔɬ territories (Vancouver, Canada). Hailing from Iran, Mongolia, and Minnesota, USA, their sound synthesizes their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds.

Formed in 2022, members Amir (guitar/production; he/him), Sondor (drums; she/her), and Zel (bass/vocals; she/they) came together to create music that is liberated, energetic, and experimental. Over the past two years, they have performed extensively in their adopted city, building a strong presence in Vancouver’s music scene.

Lussilia is a Venezuelan-Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, and project manager. Her music blends Latin, tropical rhythms, and Spanish flamenco. Born in Venezuela and having lived in four countries, her music reflects a diverse cultural background.

Her career took off with the debut song “Fiesta de Labios,” co-written and co-produced with Jorge Luis Chacín and Alfonso Ordonez. Lussilia has since developed a unique sound, incorporating Venezuelan instruments in her music. She has worked with respected producers like Guillo Lefeld and James Joubran, and artists such as Christian Pagan, Gale, Juan Carlos Torrealba, and Manuel Rangel.

Inspired by her memories of growing up in Venezuela and her love for languages, Lussilia’s music is a heartfelt expression of her roots.

Currently based in Vancouver, BC, Lussilia manages her own company, produces concerts with her live band, and shares knowledge with other artists on how to run similar projects.

Resist the urge to laugh at Skinny Dyck - the playful alias of western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck (or don’t, that’s kind of the idea). Easygoing sees Dyck moving a few steps further away from the country music environs he once wholly inhabited, but fear not, twang fans: rather than replacing that sound wholesale, he and his studio collaborators have instead created their own hybrid approaches.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids are comprised of the dynamic duo, Yung Trybez and Young D. Both originally from Kitimat and both from the Haisla Nation, they relocated to Vancouver and began their careers as rappers. After releasing five albums independently and touring all over the world, in 2023, they signed with Sony Music Canada and released their debut major label album, RED FUTURE, the following year. The album just won Rap Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. 
The duo have toured all over Canada, the US, Mexico and Australia. Known for their high-energy, electrifying performances, their reputation has landed them coveted performance opportunities with Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. Daniel Lew is a singer-songwriter with a mission to uplift the world. 10 years ago, he spontaneously went deaf in his left ear and developed tinnitus. This led him to devote his life to music. His songs combine folk, pop, and rock and are introspective in nature. His voice sounds like a blend of Bob Dylan and Chris Cornell, while his songwriting is more influenced by John Lennon and John Mayer. He has independently released 3 albums, amassed over 400 performances, and has been featured by CBC Radio One, Jade Music Festival, Pancouver Magazine, and Daily Hive Vancouver.

Recently, Daniel received praise from Jacob Collier and Ed Sheeran while he was busking. Ed invited him backstage to his show where he had the opportunity to share career insights and perform a song.

Daniel is an emerging artist in Creative BC's Career Development Program, and is recording a new album “Destiny” that is on pace to be released May 2024. He will be supporting the release with a Canadian tour. He has a vision of increasing the representation of Asian-Canadians in the music industry.

Daniel is embracing the momentum of his journey and is showing no signs of slowing down.

The Chicago quintet—Ronnie Canizaro [lead vocals], Joe Buras [keys, synthesizers, vocals], Lee McKinney [guitar], Nick Rossi [bass], and Cameron Losch [drums]—perfect that approach on 2019’s aptly titled, The Simulation [Sumerian Records]. “When you listen to the record, I hope you investigate where you see yourself and the future going in terms of technology and artificial intelligence,” exclaims Buras. The musicians architected a beacon to transmit such a message since their 2007 emergence. Not only have they performed on stages with Judas Priest, Rob Zombie, Bring Me The Horizon, and more, but they also landed four consecutive entries on the Billboard Top 200, including A Higher Place [2009], The Discovery [2011], Tomorrow We Die Alive [2013], and Soul Sphere [2015]. Additionally, they garnered features from Guitar World, Brave Words, Metalsucks, and MetalInjection, to name a few. By looking back, the group made a major leap forward. They spent 2017 performing their breakthrough 2007 debut, The New Reign, in its entirety on the road. By the time the guys hit the studio with Nick Sampson [Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men] who produced vocals while McKinney produced and engineered the entire record instrumentally, the vision crystallized for their next evolution. “We usually don’t wait this long between records,” Buras continues. “By playing The New Reign, we got back to the original vibes. Once we really started writing, it was a combination of our old and new songwriting styles. The last three albums felt like a trilogy. On this one, we take the next step throughout putting all of our skills into one distinct body of work.” That included welcoming Rossi into the fold following the departure of original bassist David Da Rocha. Beyond the creative core of McKinney and Losch handling most of the writing, Rossi lent his writing talents to the process on a handful of songs. The music further incorporated instrumental virtuosity as well as entrancing synths and twin vocals. At the same time, Buras dove into books like Jacek Dukaj’s Perfect Imperfection, kickstarting a thematic thread. On the first single “The Accursed,” screeching keys entwine with precise and pummeling riffing before spiraling towards a hard-hitting and head-nodding groove. “The songs are more anthemic,” Buras says. “They’re about not giving up when things get difficult, you feel down, or a relationship isn’t working. Instead, you don’t stop and force on. We came into this lifestyle aware of the sacrifices. This is how we’re going to live it.” “Under The Gun” upholds that sentiment, while “Silence The Echo” steamrolls forward amidst a flurry airtight guitars and a percussive maelstrom. “That one dives into silencing negative thoughts,” he elaborates. “We all feel down sometimes, but you silence those thoughts and keep moving.” In the end—whether a simulation or not—Born Of Osiris confidently embrace the future with open arms and deliver their boldest output yet. “There’s the technological side to the music, but there’s also a message of being patient and persevering,” he leaves off. “We’ve redefined our sound on this one. Everything is coming together. We’re brothers in this. It’s a new chapter for Born Of Osiris.”

With five critically - acclaimed albums to their credit and almost a decade spent touring all over the world, The Coronas have earned their place as one of Ireland’s best loved and hardest working bands. Their fifth and latest album, TRUST THE WIRE , debuted at #1 on the Irish music chart in its first week of release in the summer of 2017, becoming the band’s first album to reach the top spot. After achieving that lofty milestone, The Coronas -- Danny O’Reilly (vocals, guitar), Graham Kn ox (bass), Conor Egan (drums) and Dave McPhillips (guitar) — proceeded to take their music directly to audiences everywhere, performing shows in Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the United States and even Dubai, bookended by massive concerts in their native Ireland.
This is heady stuff for a band whose career began playing in student clubs. Most recently, they sold out Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham -- capacity 15,000 -- where they entertained their largest headline audience ever. This year t hey will headline Ireland’s largest indoor concert venue in addition to playing an array of summer festivals around the island. But this time around, festivals are also on the schedule for the U.S. After completing a short series of dates in February, Th e Coronas will return to North America in late summer for some six weeks of shows, including the eclectic Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago’s Grant Park and other high profile music events.
 
The Coronas’ Danny O'Reilly and Graham Knox have known each other practically since their birth which was just two weeks apart. Their parents were friends, and essentially the pair grew up together. They met Conor Egan at Terenure College secondary school in Dublin where, in 2001, they formed a band called Kiros with O'R eilly on vocals and guitar, Knox on bass and Egan on drums. Kiros morphed into Corona -- the name taken from the Smith - Corona typewriter in Cameron Crowe's classic film about the music business, Almost Famous — and ultimately, The Coronas. The lineup was final ized in 2006 with the addition of Dave McPhillips on lead guitar.
 
The Coronas' debut album HEROES AND GHOSTS was released in 2007 via the independent Irish label 3ú Records, its success fueled by the single San Diego Song that set Irish radio ablaze. The n came sold - out shows throughout Ireland and support slots with Paul McCartney, The Script, Justin Timberlake, Pink and many others. The albums TONY WAS AN EX - CON (2009) and CLOSER TO YOU (2011) followed, also on 3ú Records.
 
A turning point came in 2013 when the band essentially left home, lured away to London after signing with Island Records. The following year, they released THE LONG WAY, produced by Eliot James (Kaiser Chiefs, Two Door Cinema Club), but the major label experience left them disillusi oned and disappointed. More determined than ever to drive their own destiny, the band returned to Ireland to write and record TRUST THE WIRE and release it on their own label imprint -- So Far So Good Records
From its tightrope - walking title to the conten t of its lyrics to its bold production, TRUST THE WIRE brims with the band’s newly - reenergized self - belief, capturing the focus they found in leaving home, the fresh perspective it gave them and a soaring maturity in their songwriting. A decade on from th eir recording debut and surpassing their teenage dreams, it’s no surprise that The Coronas are surer of their strengths and readier to take risks.
 
“So much happened that changed us as a band,” recounts singer Danny O’Reilly. “We had to ask ourselves why we do this and what’s important to us. Our motivation had always been to make music that we love and keep improving. Maybe we’d lost sight of that. We had to step aside to refocus , and in doing that, we got our ambition back.”
 
After writing the songs for TRUST THE WIRE while locked away in an isolated house on the west coast of Ireland, The Coronas returned to London and Notting Hill’s Eastcote Studios to record once again with producer Eliot James. “It’s the first time we’ve used the same producer twice,” says Danny. “We love Eliot’s ideas. There’s a trust between us. He knows that we’re prepared to push the boundaries and how to help us do that. There were songs on THE LONG WAY that introduced synths and new sounds, and we wanted to continue with that, but take it further.”
As a result, TRUST THE WIRE fizzes with ambition, often in ways one wouldn’t expect from a band famed for their audience sing - alongs. Acoustic guitars still feature, but take a back seat to synths and organs. There’s both a subtlety and a stately grandeur to songs that now swell in size and scope, rather than bound straight to big. And the lyrics are as searingly honest as ever, but they are more intimate and inward - looking than before.
 
“Several of the songs reference what happened to u s over the last three years,” says Danny. “It would be dishonest not to mention it. Of course, there are also relationship songs; however, they’re as often about relationships within the band as with other people. But whatever our songs mean to whoever hea rs them is fine by us. If you think they’re love songs, so be it.”
TRUST THE WIRE confirmed that The Coronas were right to trust their instincts, and it has brought their burgeoning audience beyond Ireland into sharper focus. With singles from TRUST THE W IRE making inroads at U.S. radio for the first time and a string of sold out North American shows, their music is becoming more recognizable, making it necessary to once again leave home. “We can’t wait to get out on the road again,” says Danny. “We’ll be packing the van and traveling all over, building things up to the next level in different territories. Luckily for us, we love travelling together.”

Thomas Baptist Morello or Tom Morello (born May 30, 1964) is an American guitarist for the bands Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine. He also performs as a solo acoustic artist under the pseudonym The Nightwatchman. He is acclaimed for his unique guitar style and is noted for his outspoken radical politics. Morello was ranked #26 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Morello was born in Harlem, New York. His mother, Mary Morello, who is part Irish and part Italian, is a founder of Parents For Rock And Rap, an anti-censorship group. She was also a teacher at Libertyville High School. His father, Ngethe Njoroge, was a Mau Mau guerrilla and revolutionary. Morello's great-uncle, Jomo Kenyatta, was the first elected president in Kenya. Morello grew up in Libertyville, Illinois, at the time a virtually all-white suburb of Chicago. There he attended Libertyville High School. He played French horn in the school band, sang in the chorus, and was active in speech and drama club. (One prominent role was Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream.) He showed his political leanings early; in the 1980 mock elections at LHS, he campaigned for a fictitious anarchist "candidate" named Hubie Maxwell, who came in fourth place after Jimmy Carter at the overwhelmingly Republican school. Ronald Reagan won the mock election. He also wrote a piece headlined "South Africa: Racist Fascism That We Support" for the school's alternative paper, The Student Pulse. At age 13, Morello purchased his first guitar at Rigoni Music in Libertyville. He wanted a solid-body Ovation guitar, but he didn't have the money to buy one. Instead, he purchased a Kay guitar. Wanting to learn how to play "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin, he took two guitar lessons, but instead was taught the C-major scale. He decided that playing the guitar was a waste of his time, so he placed it in his closet for the next four years. Around 1980, Morello first started studying the guitar seriously. He had formed a band in the same year called the Electric Sheep which featured future Tool guitarist Adam Jones on bass. Jones wasn't originally in the band; he was a replacement for a member who quit because he felt his musical skills were far superior to those of the other Sheep. Few if any of the Sheep could really play an instrument at first (Most of their songs consisted of a single chord), but the band was an impetus for Morello to start honing his skills. Instead of performing cover songs, the Sheep wrote original material that including politically charged lyrics. None of the songs composed by the Sheep contained solos; soloing was a skill that Morello began learning in college. At the time Morello's musical tastes lay in the direction of heavy metal, particularly KISS, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Morello developed his own unique sound through the electric guitar. Later his music--and musical politics--were greatly influenced by punk rock bands like The Clash, the Sex Pistols and Devo. Morello graduated in 1982 and began attending Harvard University. There he made a point of practicing every day for up to eight hours without fail, no matter how much studying he had to do. [5] He graduated in 1986 with an honors degree in political science. He moved to L.A., where he briefly worked as an aide to Sen. Alan Cranston as he set about trying to join or start a band. (Adam Jones moved to L.A. as well; Morello introduced Jones to some of his future bandmates.) In 1988 Morello joined Lock Up, a glam rock band that released one album through Geffen Records before splitting up. This record was called Something Bitchin' This Way Comes, which enjoyed only slight success. Morello had been crushed by the lack of success he experienced in Lock Up. He visited a club in Los Angeles where Zack de la Rocha was rapping. After viewing de la Rocha's lyric books, Tom asked him to front a band. Morello drafted Brad Wilk, a drummer who had unsuccessfully auditioned for Lock Up, and de la Rocha introduced the two to his friend Tim Commerford. The four formed a new band, Rage Against the Machine. Rage had great success, especially in North America and Europe. Their first, self-titled album, was recognized by fans for Morello's innovative guitar as well as its originality (being one of the first records to combine rock and hip-hop). Morello expressed his attitude toward songwriting during this period as overtly political: A good song should make you wanna tap your feet and get with your girl. A great song should destroy cops and set fire to the suburbs. I’m only interested in writing great songs. After four years of silence and rumors of break-ups, the band released its second album, Evil Empire. The album moved away from the traditional metal guitar work of the first album; it was experimental in nature and demonstrated Morello's ability to use the guitar in strange ways, showcasing his abilities with the "kill switch". In 1999, the band released The Battle of Los Angeles, their most commercially successful record. In late 2000, they released another album entitled Renegades. Shortly before the release, de la Rocha left Rage, and the band's instrumentalists said they wanted to continue making music together. Billboard reported on January 19, 2007 that there were rumors that Rage Against the Machine could reunite at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.[3]. These rumors were confirmed in a Los Angeles Times article on January 22and later on the band's official website. The band are billed to headline the final day of Coachella 2007 on Sunday, April 29. Billboard reports that sources suggest this will likely be a one-off. After de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine, the remaining bandmates started jamming with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell at the suggestion of producer Rick Rubin. The new group was first called Civilian, but changed their name to Audioslave before their first album was released. The band released their eponymous debut album on November 19, 2002. It was a massive critical and commercial success, attaining triple-platinum status. The band released their sophomore album,Out of Exile, on May 24, 2005. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts and attained platinum status. In the same year, they released a DVD documenting their trip as the first American rock band to play a free show in Cuba. Morello recently stated he has made a commitment to Audioslave and is "in it for the long haul." The band's third album, Revelations, was released in the fall of 2006. Morello is less known for his folk music, which he plays under the alias "The Nightwatchman". He has explained: The Nightwatchman is my political folk alter ego. I've been writing these songs and playing them at open mic nights with friends for some time. This is the first time I've toured with it. When I play open mic nights, it's announced as The Nightwatchman. There will be kids there who are fans of my electric guitar playing, and you see them there scratching their heads. But it's something that I enjoy doing. I look at it more as an extension of my politics. Then again, some of the songs are not explicitly political. It really helped me grow as an artist and songwriter. Once you prick the vein you never know what is going to come out. You could aim for all union songs and you find yourself in other territory. One of his folk songs, "No One Left," which compares the aftermath of September 11 to that of a U.S. attack on Iraq, appears on the album Songs and Artists that Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11. According to Billboard, Morello as The Nighwatchman will be releasing his first debut album, One Man Revolution, in April, and his website confirms the album will be released on April 24th. Morello and Wilk joined with Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Billy Gould of Faith No More to record the song "Calling Dr Love" for the 1994 KISS tribute album Kiss My Ass. The lineup was billed as Shandi's Addiction. In August 1995 Morello contacted former Articles of Faith frontman Vic Bondi and asked him if he wanted to work on a Rage side project. Tentatively titled Weatherman, the short-lived group featured Bondi on vocals, Morello on guitar, Matt Johnson on bass, and Abe Van Eyck on drums. The recorded demos in September 1995. Bondi wrote all the lyrics, while Morello wrote all the music. One track, "Enola Gay", was recorded by Brett Eliason in fall 1996. Tom re-used the main riff of the song for the Audioslave single "Cochise." Morello also played lead guitar on three tracks of Primus' 1999 studio album Antipop. Morello worked with The Crystal Method on their 2001 album Tweekend. He co-produced and played guitars on the smash single "Name of the Game" and "Wild, Sweet and Cool". Morello played guitar in the score for Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006). Morello played the guitar riff heard in the final battle scene of the film Dodgeball. Morello played guitar in the single "One Man Army" by The Prodigy. In July 2006, TheNewsTribune.com reported that Morello and Boots Riley, front man of The Coup, would collaborate on a project called Street Sweepers. Riley has often performed alongside Morello's alter ego The Nightwatchman, and Morello produced and performed on a few tracks for The Coup's 2006 release Pick a Bigger Weapon. Morello is famed for his guitar style, which consists of punk/funk hybrid riffs and hip hop-inspired sounds. His guitar playing is also characterized by heavy use of guitar effects, such as delay, modulation, harmonizers, distortion, pitch shifters, feedback, and others in unique ways and combinations. Critically acclaimed, he is said to use the guitar in a unique and imaginative way; rather than just plucking the strings, he pulls off maneuvers such as toggling between two pickups - one on and one off - while fretting notes to mimic the sound of a DJ's crossfader, using feedback from the amp and the Digitech Whammy to create a solo, and cr
