Gamelan Gita Asmara celebrates its 23rd season with a stunning concert of dance and instrumental music from the classical music tradtions of the island of Bali, Indonesia. Artistic director Michael Tenzer and guest director I Putu Swaryandana Ichi Oka have programmed a collection of works that provide a cross-section of the styles and forms of gamelan music and dance. 

"Kebyar Susun", with its unpredictable phrases and virtuosic techniques, represents the explosive and energetic style of instrumental music that revitalized and popularized gamelan music in the 20th century. The traditional masked dances, "Topeng Keras" and "Topeng Tua," place the gamelan in a dialogue with familiar characters from Balinese fable and myth, a young warrior and an aging king respectively. Dance, music, and song come together in "Palawakya," another energetic kebyar-style piece, featuring a performer who dances, plays the trompong pot gongs, and also sings ancient poetry. Finally, the experimental side of gamelan music is explored in director Michael Tenzer’s composition "Banyuari," synthesizing the melodious tones of the bronze instruments with the percussive language of South-Indian Karnatak traditions. In this special 23rd anniversary performance, GGA is joined by international dance artists Shoko Yamamuro, Ni Dewa Ayu Eka Putri, and I Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena.

OF THE EARTH is a concert of music exploring our relationship with the earth, but despite all, ultimately optimistic in outlook: if we renew the earth, we renew ourselves, and our relationships with one another. Two time Juno award winner singer songwriter Alfie Zappacosta delivers a performance like no other. A sophisticated musician with international poise Alfie sings in both English and Italian; studied in jazz and classical guitar. He is a virtuoso composer and seasoned live performer. Alfie's rich soaring vocals have always been his signature and his songs diverse drawing from pop, jazz and rock elements.

Five decades committed to his craft Alfie has invested in a lot of hard work to reach a capacity to produce complex and impactful music. Much more it is his underlying fabric, a talent, a natural affinity and introspective ability to create music that touches the hearts and souls of his audience.

 Alfie’s vocal dexterity and song writing proficiency was uncovered by a publisher while writing for his first original band “Surrender, a five-piece group that recorded three albums in the late 1970s into the early 1980s. 

As a solo artist Alfie's career took off with a legacy of hits that brought him to the world's attention. "Start Again”, “Passion”, “When I Fall in Love Again” and “Nothing Can Stand In Your Way” written with David Foster. In 1988 he was awarded JUNOs for “Album of The Year’ and “Most Promising Artist”, and American Music Award for “Most Popular Album of The Year”. 

These hit songs were originally written for acoustic and jazz presentations. Writing for radio began to rub against Alfie’s musical integrity and he became frustrated with the demands of music trends. Alfie broke from the stereotype and began to write the lyrics and melodies that were authentically him, revealing his insight into relationships and his advanced knowledge of music.

Alison Moyet (born Genevieve Alison Jane Moyet on 18 June 1961), is an English pop singer-songwriter noted for her bluesy voice. Moyet was born in Billericay, Essex, England to a French father and English mother. She grew up in Basildon, where she attended school. After leaving school at 16, she worked as a shop worker and a piano tuner. She was involved in a number of punk rock, pub rock and blues bands in the South East Essex area during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including The Vandals and the Screamin' Ab Dabs, The Vicars and The Little Roosters. Her mainstream pop career began in 1982 when she formed the electro-pop duo Yazoo with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. The duo had several hits, including "Situation", "Only You", "Don't Go" and recorded two albums, "Upstairs At Eric's" and "You And Me Both". The group was notable for melding Clarke's trademark electronic sounds with Moyet's warm, soulful voice. In 1983 Moyet and Clarke decided to disband Yazoo. While Clarke went on to form Erasure, Moyet signed to CBS (in part because it had been Janis Joplin's label), and began her solo career. In 1984 she released her debut album "Alf" (titled after her punk-era nickname). Alf included contributions by popular producers/songwriters Swain and Jolley, as well as a song, "Invisible", written by Motown legend Lamont Dozier. The record was a hit in Britain, reaching number one in the album charts. Alf spawned 3 hit singles, "Love Resurrection", "Invisible" and "All Cried Out". In the US, "Invisible" was a Top 40 hit (something Yazoo had never achieved). In 1985 Moyet performed at the historic Live Aid concert, alongside Paul Young. She also released a single not featured on "Alf", a cover of the standard "That Ole Devil Called Love." The single went to #2 on the UK singles chart. (At present, it remains Moyet's highest-charting UK single.) In 1986 Moyet had another big UK hit with the single "Is This Love?," followed in 1987 by the album Raindancing. Raindancing spawned further hit singles, including a cover of Floy Joy's "Weak In The Presence of Beauty" and "Ordinary Girl". In 1987, she scored another cover hit with "Love Letters"; the video for the song featured comedy duo French & Saunders. Following a period of personal and career evaluation Hoodoo was released in 1991. Hoodoo, which took several steps away from the glossy pop sheen of Raindancing and was a far earthier and more personal album. Compared to her earlier releases, Hoodoo received little label support and only minimal promotion. The album sold respectably in Britain, and was nominated for a Grammy for the single "It Won't Be Long." However, the release of Hoodoo marked the beginning of what was to become a long fight for Moyet to secure complete control of her artistic direction. Like many similar artists of Moyet's calibre (including Aimee Mann and the late Kirsty MacColl), Moyet was reluctant to record a radio-friendly "pop" album simply for the sake of creating chart hits. Moyet's next album Essex (1994) was also a source of controversy for her; in order for the album to be released, her label (now Sony) insisted that certain Essex tracks be re-recorded and re-produced, and that there be additional material remixed to create a more 'commercial' package. The video for the single "Whispering Your Name" again featured Dawn French. Following the release of Essex, Sony released a greatest-hits compilation of Moyet's work the following year. Singles entered the UK charts at number one. Following incredible CD success and a UK tour, Singles was re-issued as a double CD set which included "No Overdubs", a bonus live CD. Upon re-issue Singles again charted, this time in the top 20. Due to prolonged litigation with Sony, Moyet did not record or release a new studio album for over eight years after the release of Essex. During this time, however, Moyet recorded vocals for Tricky, Sylk-130, Ocean Colour Scene, The Lightning Seeds and King Britt, and was featured on the British leg of the Lilith Fair tour. 2001 saw the release of The Essential Alison Moyet CD. In August 2002, after years of holding out and refusing to compromise, Moyet was finally released from her Sony contract. Moyet signed to Sanctuary Records and released her first studio album in eight years, Hometime, an album which Sony had refused to release. Hometime was produced by the Insects, who had also produced works by Goldfrapp and Massive Attack. The release of the CD launched Moyet into the top five best-selling female UK artists of 2002 and resulted in a Brit nomination for Best Female Vocal as well as a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. Moyet's following CD, Voice, an eclectic collection of covers, was released on 6 September 2004 and entered the UK charts at number seven. The album was later re-issued with a bonus track, "Alfie." A companion DVD, One Blue Voice, was released in 2006. After signing with the W14 Music label in late 2006, Moyet released the all-original The Turn in October 2007. Louis Armstrong was once asked what his favorite kind of music was, and his response was simple; “Good music”. Petunia & the Vipers’ sound may not sit comfortably in one certain genre, but “Good Music” describes it well. Hank Williams on acid… Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s Hobo junction… Avant-Country night club scene music… One of the best bands in the world today, of any kind… hillbilly-flavoured-swing inflected-ragtime-goodtime-thunderously rolling-one-of-a-kind-you-don’t-want-to-miss-this-sort-of-a-show… A new music that springboards off of music of the past and jumps into the present day, left with only echoes of the past… Something in between 1920’s and steam punk. It’s good for your mind… These are just a few of the words uttered by folks around the globe trying to pin down a description of all that is Petunia & The Vipers. If one wished to talk about the birth of the blues, one would need to dig into the influences that preceded it’s birth. The same is true about Petunia & the Vipers. If they followed a recipe and added musical styles as ingredients, it would start by simply adding country and blues, and we’d have your basic dry ingredients right there, but lacking the true essence of their sound. Mix in a dose of ragtime, some Dixieland jazz, a hint of bebop, some western swing and old time cowboy music, a bit of jug band & string band music. Flavor with a significant dose of Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams, and a bit of Blind Willie McTell, Blind Lemon Jefferson and a few more “Blind” spices. Now you’ve got the batter for a cake. Bake on high with the dotted rhythms of Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian, Romanian and African folk music. Ice the whole cake with some punk rock, alternative and Bowie (who also spins off a host of influences of the UK music past), and you’ve got a delectable musical concoction…part old-tyme, part new times, part no time at all, part all-of-the-time… Sun Ra said, “the key to freedom is discipline”. You cannot break the rules if you do not understand the rules. Petunia and the Vipers’ sound is a familiar and yet wholly new music for that reason: they intimately understand the rules of classic Americana music(s) and where the edges of that painting lie…and they refuse to paint inside of the lines at any time. This is a new and modern band playing unadulterated, unclassified, unleashed sounds that rhyme with older sounds of the past, and are furiously driving the future wave of a new idiom.

It is, says Alison Moyet, quite remarkable to think that she’s been singing for “some serious years”. She formed her first band at 16 in Basildon, was in Yazoo at 20 and released her first solo album Alf at 23. In the four decades since Alf, Moyet’s solo work has been defined not only by her refusal to repeat herself, but by that extraordinary voice: still recognisable in an instant, still capable of stopping you in your tracks, a voice big enough to fill a stadium and yet intimate enough to make you feel as though she’s singing just for you. 
 
 
 
 
 
Key is a blazing showcase of the depth and breadth of Moyet’s song writing ability that unlocks who she is as a creative artist. With nine studio solo albums to choose from to celebrate her fortieth year as a solo artist, Moyet wanted “to look at the trajectory of those decades and explore songs that, in their original form, were never fully realised or have had their relevance to me altered by time.” 
 
 
 
 
 
There are inevitably certain songs Moyet won’t sing again simply because they “don’t resonate with me anymore.” Perhaps because she was on the cusp of adulthood when she originally sang them or hadn’t yet had her heart broken. Perhaps they are cover songs that she “doesn’t recognise as part of my language now.” No matter: for Key she took to the studio with Sean McGhee, her long-standing musical director for live shows and producer and arranger across all the songs on the new album. It was a gargantuan task which included readdressing fan favourites such as Love Resurrection and All Cried Out, both from Alf. Meanwhile, Is This Love?, from the 1986 album Raindancing, co-written with Dave Stewart and featured in the BAFTA-nominated film All of Us Strangers, has been reworked as a giant shimmering ballad. 
 
 
 
 
 
In Yazoo, Moyet largely wrote on her own, with the exception of Situation and State Farm, which were crafted with Vince Clarke. As a solo artist, she has collaborated with myriad songwriters and producers. Working with Steve Jolley and Tony Swain on Alf was “a new and interesting experience unhindered by the burden of experience”, but it was her significant work with Pete Glenister that would identify her melodic and lyrical imperatives as a solo artist. “Pete is a supremely talented fellow who constructs sublime chord progressions and is a truly fine writer.” The Insects, producers of 2002’s Hometime, later created a perfect sound bed to showcase the Moyet/Glenister songs. “That was my first personal experience of finding synergy on an album; it was an important career shape shifter.”
 
 
 
 
 
It was, however, with Guy Sigsworth that Moyet found her perfect foil. “In many ways he has been reward for my dogged endurance. I’m totally unbound when working with Guy. He writes tracks that I then write songs to. No ‘what to do?’ No preamble. A creative trust. We allow each our own language.” The two albums made with Sigsworth – the minutes from 2013 and Other from 2017 – Moyet considers highlights of her career. Key includes two reworkings from those records, All Signs of Life and Filigree. “My work with Guy needed to be referenced, but didn’t demand alteration. That said, Sean has arranged an exquisite take on Filigree quite unlike all the rest. It’s a song about perseverance, which is really quite fitting.” 
 
 
 
 
 
The two new songs on Key – the lavish Such Small Ale and exquisite pop of The Impervious Me – were written respectively with Sean McGhee and co-writers Richard Oakes and John Garden. “I wanted to write the new material with Sean because so very much of him is on Key. He produced and arranged all 18 tracks. A ridiculous polymath.” 
 
 
 
 
 
With touring stalled by the lockdown years – Moyet enrolled at Brighton University and graduated with a first-class degree in Fine Art Printmaking BA (Hons) in the summer of 2023 – she is keen to take Key on the road. “Live work really matters to me,” she says. “I can’t dial in a performance. I love the physical feeling that singing gives me. It’s totally primal and euphoric. On stage I remember how to connect with myself.”

Niki blurs genre lines and shares honestly and vulnerably in the hope listeners will feel seen, heard, and a little less alone. A reminder that it is okay to not be okay as she tries to give the world a hug, one song at a time.

Clare Twiddy is a Vancouver based artist who creates moody Electronic Pop music. Her songs showcase dark, gritty soundscapes combined with dense vocal harmonies inspired by artists such as Banks, Rezz, Bishop Briggs, and Miley Cyrus.

ONE OK ROCK has built a strong connection with fans through their mix of emo, alternative rock, and pop influences, along with a live performance that is unparalleled. Formed in 2005 & debuted in 2007, ONE OK ROCK started out with shows at small live houses and summer festivals. They quickly grew in popularity, performing at the iconic Nippon Budokan and eventually headlining large outdoor stadiums, arenas, and dome venues across Japan. Their success extended beyond Japan after signing a world-wide record deal, allowing them to bring their music to fans in the U.S., Europe, and Asia through numerous headlining tours. In 2022, they released the album Luxury Disease and continued to tour extensively. This included opening for MUSE on their world tour, a North American, European and Asian headlining tour along with their biggest ever domestic tour in Japan. In 2024, the band launched their largest world tour to date, that featured 8 shows in 7 cities, attracting nearly 190,000 fans to mostly sold out venues. With their emotional songs and energetic performances, ONE OK ROCK has become a major influence in the music scene, both in Japan and around the world.

Six-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jason Isbell is one of the most respected and celebrated artists of his generation. The North Alabama native possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. Isbell sings of the everyday human condition with thoughtful, heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty.

After releasing multiple albums and touring the world with his band, the 400 Unit, Isbell will begin 2025 with a change of pace. He will hit the road on his own, performing solo this winter and early spring at historic music venues across Europe and the US.

In conjunction with these much anticipated shows, Isbell will be releasing a new album featuring only his voice and an acoustic guitar, an all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17. These recordings further demonstrate his pure talent as a songwriter and musician. Produced by Gena Johnson and Jason Isbell, and recorded at Electric Lady Studios in NYC, ‘Foxes in the Snow’ is set to be released on March 7th.

MIKE is a quintessential old soul. The 24-year-old artist’s wisdom is evident in both his calm delivery and measured questioning. Known for introspective, subtly profound rhymes that explore grief, family, and identity, and melt over muffled, soul-seasoned samples, MIKE’s newest record, Burning Desire, is his biggest to date: both in length, but more so artistically. For the first time in his career, MIKE truly reaches outside of his immediate circle for collaborators, pulling in everyone from Larry June to Liv.e to Lila Ramani (of Crumb) to Earl Sweatshirt and more. The beloved rapper has come a long way from making waves in underground hip-hop circles with the [sLUms] collective formed in New York in 2015. Since, he’s released numerous critically celebrated albums, earned Pitchfork’s Best New Music accolade twice, and toured with artists like Blood Orange, Earl Sweatshirt, The Alchemist, and Freddie Gibbs. Burning Desire sees MIKE confidently step out as the leader of a new movement within hip hop, as he breaks through the ceiling of the underground and introduces the style of rap he originated to a wider audience. If anything is certain about this next chapter for MIKE, it is that it will be on his own terms.
