Fri 25 Nov: Tour of Eisenhower's D-Day Map Room & HQ, Portsmouth. https://hiddenhistorytours.uk
- Fri at 10:00AM - 12:00PM
- Southwick Park
Visit the amazing operations room inside a stately home where Churchill and Eisenhower and other VIPS met to plan D-Day!
This is an absolutely undiscovered historical gem, as being on an operational military base it is not open to the general public. Inside the stately home that was requisitioned for the war, and never given back, we'll be visiting the room in which Eisenhower actually gave the "Go" order to launch the D-Day invasion in June 1944. We'll also visit the operations room where the original and absolutely unique map, of painted wood (Grade 1 listed), fills an entire wall from floor to ceiling and side to side. It shows the south coast of Britain and the north coast of France, detailing landing beaches, convoy routes, minefields, tide states, drop zones etc and was used to brief VIPs (including Churchill, de Gaulle, and King George) on Operation Overlord. With this amazing backdrop we will tell the story of D-Day and the incredible people involved. Tour lasts approx two hours. Also includes optional access to Royal Military Police museum on site afterwards. Why not book for the underground tour on the 21 January 2023 to visit the tunnels of Fort Southwick UGHQ, D-Day's underground HQ - part of the same epic D-Day story.
